Epic Games: Dev Cost to Double on Next Gen Titles

Epic Games is well known for its Unreal Tournament and Gears of War series. They are also the developers of the highly prized Unreal Engine. With Unreal Engine 4 coming for the next gen consoles, fans expect to see drastically improved graphics and lighting features. Several months ago they gave us a preview of what we can expect from this new engine:

Impressive to say the least, but it seems it will come with a hefty price. Development costs will most likely double what we have right now. However, double is not nearly as bad as what Epic feared it would be. Tim Sweeney, Epic Games' chief technology officer, revealed it could have gone much worse.
“If we extrapolate that into creating an entire game, we were worried that the cost would go up by a factor of three or four or even five in the next generation," he said, as reported by Gamesindustry International “And of course, we felt that was not acceptable.”
Hopefully we won't see an increase in the cost of next generation games. That is highly unlikely anyways, but it's still a good idea to hope.
